M Offices
New Delhi, India
2023 — 2024
M Offices in New Delhi, India is a refined project that harmoniously merges modernist architectural principles with locally sourced elements. Drawing inspiration from the iconic works of Mies van der Rohe, the office space embraces clean lines, natural materials, and a meticulous attention to detail, creating an environment that exudes both sophistication and functionality.
The program, commissioned by an Indian client with a keen appreciation for minimalism, covers almost 3,000 square meters. The interior concept is rooted in the client’s affinity for wood veneer and natural stone, a reflection of the company’s own manufacturing expertise and capabilities. The design consciously integrates smoked oak veneer and Indian stone, paying homage to the materiality and aesthetic language of modernist icons like the Seagram Building.
One of the project’s most distinctive features is its innovative ceiling design, which serves as an architectural protagonist throughout the space. A custom-made 15x15 cm grid structure guides the entire layout, transforming what was initially a standard metal grid into an elegant and purposeful element. Crafted from white-painted wood in general office areas and rich timber in VIP zones, the ceiling not only demonstrates material versatility but also showcases the craftsmanship achievable through locally sourced elements.
The office interiors are meticulously made to reflect the essence of modernism while preserving a sense of warmth and approachability. The walls are clad in smoked oak veneer, seamlessly blending with light natural stone flooring. These design choices embody a modernist architectural vision and emphasize volumetric compositions and thoughtful materiality.
Furniture plays a pivotal role in reinforcing the project’s architectural narrative. The selection features a curated mix of iconic and custom-made pieces. From Chandigarh chairs inspired by Le Corbusier to sofas reminiscent of Jules Wabbes’ Belgian craftsmanship, each piece contributes to the office’s unique identity. The inclusion of lighting fixtures in bronze and select artworks from Belgium further elevates the space, adding subtle nods to European design heritage. Indeed, minimal art and materials within M Offices invite to contemplate and remove distractions: Patrons are invited to focus on the subtleties of form, color, texture and light. The project team wanted to create a pure, direct experience rooted in simplicity and tactility, adopting a monochromatic rigor which at the same time exudes warmth.
M Offices is more than just a workplace; it is a carefully orchestrated balance between modernist rigor and contextual sensitivity. By thoughtfully integrating raw elements and design essentials that honor both global and local influences, Vincent Van Duysen Architects have created a space that resonates with the client’s vision while maintaining a timeless architectural quality.
