PN Penthouse

Antwerp, Belgium

2016 — 2022

When the clients commissioned PN Penthouse to Vincent Van Duysen Architects, they were clear on one thing: They wanted a new take on materials and colors rendered via the VVDA contemporary design language. Vincent and the team took on the challenge diving headfirst into studying how color would not only be used as ornament but also influence the spatial experience.

After a mood board that blended inspiration coming from chromatic work by Luis Barragan all the way to De Stijl/Neoplasticism, this alternative approach was discarded. The team opted instead for a modern spatial design where an open plan around technical cores and newly integrated patios created soft ambiances granting panoramic vistas of the majestic river Schelde and the bustling cityscape of Antwerp.

Initially envisioned as two distinct apartments, the program in the end merged into a generous 365 square meters of interior space with an additional 160 square meters of outdoor terraces. The outcome embodies the perfect balance between optimal planning and functionality.

One of the standout features is the result of early project involvement by VVDA—an addition of two outdoor patios strategically placed to infuse the interior with natural light and lush greenery, a clear nod to the client’s father roots from a region immersed in nature whose residence features a botanical garden. The smaller front patio, featuring a tree, provides a serene escape, while a larger, sheltered rear patio, connected to the building’s façade, offers an intimate outdoor sanctuary. The overhanging terrace in front of the rear patio, with an abundance of plants, enhances its seclusion and shields views from neighboring structures.

Upon entering the apartment, your eyes are immediately drawn to the stunning view of the first patio and the meandering Schelde. This central outdoor core gracefully divides the living and dining areas while maintaining a visual connection between them. A small tree serves as the centerpiece, introducing nature into the heart of the home. A large window from the adjacent library connects this tranquil space to the interior, offering a perfect reading nook. The living room, full of light, boasts a large seating area facing a fireplace.

The kitchen, streamlined in its plan and featuring a central island, sits at the rear of the penthouse next to the large patio. This culinary nook is adorned with natural materials, including wooden accents, and opens into the patio for an optimal spatial experience. Next door, passing the hidden pantry, is the dining area, where a wall adjacent to the library doubles as a backdrop for contemporary art. The library, a cherished space for the client who has a penchant for contemporary architecture, art, and literature, occupies a central position within the floor plan. It effortlessly connects to the patio, kitchen, dining area, master suite, and guest bedrooms, making it the heart of relaxation and creativity.

The master bedroom boasts a spacious en suite bathroom and views of the Schelde and beyond, while a strategically placed skylight bathes the adjacent dressing room in natural light. The two guest rooms and guest bathroom are nestled on the back side of the building, offering privacy and tranquility.

The choice of materials in this penthouse is a testament to the harmonious blend of nature and modernity. Terrazzo, wood, and plaster are the primary elements, creating a soothing and cohesive ambiance. Wooden accents grace the floors, walls, and cupboards, while terrazzo finds its place in the bathrooms and kitchen, lending an elegant touch.

Custom-made furniture seamlessly blends with VVDA-designed pieces such as the Octave sofa by Molteni&C and with vintage pieces like Wegner tables and Jeanneret lounge chairs, infusing the space with character and style.

PN Penthouse stands tall over Antwerp and beyond, a residence aptly designed to convey light and greenery into the lives of the owners, where functions and flows pivot around two lush patios. It is a strong statement by our team to strive for functionality, comfort, and material textures with symbiotic relations between indoor and outdoor, light and dark, tighter spaces and expansive corners.
