The design of three different products for Molteni&C was inspired by the masters of Flemish painting. The Paul sofa, the small Jan table and the Quinten sideboard.
In particular, Vincent Van Duysen explored two historic periods that characterized the legendary Antwerp school of painting.
For the small table,Jan van Eyck (1390-1441), for the sideboard Quinten Massijs (1466-1530), founders of the school and painters whose obsession for detail led to compositions that were often like those of modern photographs. For the sofa, Pieter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), master of a style of Flemish painting that verged on the Baroque, with more delicate tones, where color prevailed over form.
A set of elegantly proportioned sofas with reassuring lines, elements that emphasize
Vincent Van Duysen’s expressive rationality. The project includes linear sofas, angular
compositions, chaises longues and islands, all with a single seat cushion.
Paul features generous dimensions, distinctive double seams and great comfort, elements that look
good, even in the center of the room. The impression is lightweight, accentuated by the
neat design of the pressure die-cast aluminum feet. Items featuring considerable depth
complete the project, for a comfortable, luxurious and cosy way of sitting.
The structural elements, made of metal, with pewter or copper finishes, bring
lightness and sobriety to the volumes, while the eucalyptus or oak woods, the stones and
the glass, used for the surfaces, elegantly re-design their proportions.
Perfectly proportioned sideboards, an attentive choice of materials and treatments
such as matt or gloss laquered woods and, in the new finishes, copper or pewter, as well
as attention to the individual details ensure that every single item of furniture is a piece of
refined beauty, where lines and volumes blend harmoniously.
