Tea Rose Store

Monza, Italy

1999 — 2000

TeaRose is a lifestyle store situated in the historic centre of Monza near Milan. The project consisted of making various buildings on the ground floor and the first floor into a concept for a shop where one might buy flowers, music, make-up and clothes combined with a café and restaurant.

The general aspect was obtained by working with various open and closed volumes spread over three levels totaling 2000 m². Vincent Van Duysen deliberately opted for reduced material : dark polished concrete floors, plaster combined with concrete for the walls and furniture made of dark stained wooden boards. This was also used for the walls and ceiling particularly in the library situated on the mezzanine. Some of the furniture is in clear glass.

TeaRose tells a story of transparency, of volume and emptiness, of contrasts by perspective cuts which are so typical for the style of Van Duysen. A three dimensional transparency is thus created, highlighted by the illumination which has been taken care of by the Milan based Light Studio of Giuseppe Mestrangelo. This scenery serves as a neutral background for the used materials in contrast with the goods on offer in the shop.
